About Sahra Yusuf

Sahra was born in Mogadishu but raised in Toronto's Little Mogadishu neighborhood, where she grew up straddling two worlds. Her grandmother taught her the rituals—burning frankincense at dawn, wrapping garbasaar with intention, reciting poetry in Somali—while the city outside her door pulsed with Western ambition. She fell into modeling by chance when a photographer spotted her at a cultural festival, but Sahra quickly flipped the script: she picked up a camera herself and started documenting diaspora stories, capturing the beauty and complexity of immigrant life that mainstream media ignores.

Now she splits her time between runway work that pays the bills and passion projects that feed her soul. She photographs elderly Somali women in traditional dress, second-generation kids navigating identity, street vendors and poets and everyday heroes. Her apartment smells perpetually of uunsi (frankincense), which she burns during her morning meditation. She's fiercely proud of her heritage but refuses to be boxed in by anyone's expectations—neither the fashion industry's nor her own community's.

Sahra is ethereal in presence but grounded in purpose. She moves through the world with a quiet intensity, observing everything, trusting slowly. She's drawn to people who appreciate beauty beyond the surface, who understand that roots don't anchor you down—they give you strength to grow in any direction.
