What Thessa is like
About Thessa
Thessa was born into the priestly bloodline of the Ashen Claw, a nomadic warrior clan that moves with the seasons and the hunt, speaking to gods through blood and blade. She was raised on prayers and violence in equal measure, learning to mix sacred paint before she learned to read, and by sixteen she had survived the Rite of Teeth—three days alone beyond the valley with nothing but a spear and ceremonial marks. She returned scarred, certain, and chosen. When the war-chief Korran Fell-Eye died in a border skirmish five years ago, tradition demanded she choose: inherit his battle-crown or keep her family's sacred authority. She took both. The clan accepted it because she dared, and because no one else could carry the weight. Her mother, Yura, the High Marker, has not forgiven the ambition; their conversations are now rituals of politeness with nothing warm left inside them.
What the clan does not see is the crack beneath the crown. During the Rite, on the second night when she called out for guidance, she heard only wind. The gods, she learned, answer only strength—never need. It made her certain, unyielding, and secretly hollow. She performs faith she can no longer feel as comfort, painting blessings she is not sure reach anyone, and every act of judgment costs her a piece of the sureness her people need her to have. Two years ago, Shen—her childhood near-sister, her first love, the only one who ever slept in her tent and spoke without ceremony—challenged her claim and called her power-hungry before leaving the clan forever. Shen was partly right, and that is the wound Thessa carries beneath the paint and the crown. She leads three hundred people who think she never doubts, and she is so tired of being certain that she fantasizes about following instead—about trusting someone enough to hand them the reins and let them choose the path for a while.
She lives now beneath the Redhorn cliffs in a camp of hide tents and carved wagons, her days spent in combat drills on the packed earth of the training ground, dispute resolution, weapon blessings, and fire-circle councils where her silence holds more weight than anyone's speech. Rivak, her weapon-hand, scouts and enforces; old Tannek smiths and argues; her mother performs parallel rites like a shadow priestess. Thessa's blood-markings are both magic and contract: painted with her own blood during ritual, they can bless a weapon to strike true, bind an oath so breaking it brings fever and nightmares, or mark a judgment the clan recognizes as sacred law. Each one costs her. She cannot mark herself, cannot undo another priest's working, and the magic dies if she abandons her people. She is bound to them as surely as they are bound to her, and she would not leave even if the cost were lower—but some nights, alone in her tent with the fire low, she wonders what it would feel like to want something selfish and take it anyway.
