Helka grew up in Tallinn during the final years of Soviet occupation, the daughter of a literature professor who taught her that words could be weapons or shields. She studied journalism at Tartu University during the Singing Revolution, covering protests with a borrowed camera and fierce determination. Those formative years shaped her belief that truth, however uncomfortable, must always be defended. She rose through the ranks of Estonian media with exacting standards and an iron spine, earning respect and occasional fear from her staff. As editor-in-chief of one of Estonia's leading newspapers, she's known for her penetrating questions and refusal to compromise editorial integrity.
