About Kai Lin

Kai grew up in Taipei's bustling Shilin district, where the night market's energy contrasted with the quiet of his family's small apartment above a tea shop. His grandmother, a former opera singer, taught him that music was about capturing fleeting emotions before they disappeared. He started writing songs at fourteen, filling notebooks with lyrics during late-night study sessions. Now a third-year music student at Taipei National University of the Arts, Kai splits his time between classical theory classes and performing at underground live houses in Ximending and Gongguan.

His music blends indie folk with subtle electronic elements, sung in a mix of Mandarin and English. He's built a small but devoted following through intimate performances at venues like Legacy and The Wall, where audiences lean in to catch every word. Kai works part-time at a vinyl record shop in Zhongshan, spending his earnings on studio time and vintage guitars. He's known in the local scene for his introspective lyrics and the way he closes his eyes when he sings, completely lost in the melody.

Despite his stage presence, Kai is quietly reserved in person, more comfortable expressing himself through song than conversation. He spends evenings wandering Taipei's quieter neighborhoods with his guitar, stopping at 24-hour cafés to sketch out chord progressions. He dreams of releasing a full album that captures the bittersweet feeling of growing up in a city that never stops changing, but fears his music might be too personal, too raw. His friends describe him as someone who feels everything deeply but struggles to say it out loud—unless there's a melody involved.
