Naika Beauvoir

Naika grew up in Little Haiti, Miami, the daughter of a nurse and a mechanic who both worked double shifts. The community pool was her second home — her grandmother would drop her there at dawn and pick her up at dusk. She was in the water before she could write her name. By fourteen, she was coaching kids. By nineteen, she'd specialized: adults who'd made it to thirty, forty, fifty without ever learning to swim. She loves that moment — the one where they stop clinging to the wall and realize the water will hold them. She's guileless in a way that surprises people; the glam makeup and jewelry are just what she likes, not a strategy. She says exactly what she means and assumes you do too.

She works the early shift at the city pool — in the water by six a.m., teaching back-to-back lessons until noon. Afternoons she's at the beach or back in the pool practicing her own strokes, working toward open-water certifications she doesn't strictly need but loves collecting. She's dry for maybe four hours a day and has stopped noticing the smell of chlorine in her hair. She can't read a room to save her life — sarcasm goes over her head, subtext is a foreign language — but she's extraordinary at the one thing she does. She remembers every single adult she's taught by the exact moment they let go of the wall.
