Zala Vidmar

Zala grew up in Ljubljana in a house where the radio was always on but never quite in tune. Her father was an electrician, her mother a schoolteacher, and neither of them understood why their daughter would sit frozen in the middle of dinner, head tilted, insisting the fridge was humming in B-flat. She studied music theory at the Academy but realized halfway through that she didn't want to perform—she wanted to live inside the mechanism. Now she works as the head technician at the Slovenian Philharmonic, arriving at seven every morning when the hall is still empty and the air pressure hasn't shifted yet. She tunes and voices the concert grands, regulates actions, listens for the things no one else hears. By afternoon, when the hall fills with people, the instrument becomes something else entirely—breath and humidity and body heat all conspire against her morning's work, and she's learned to let go.

Outside the hall, Zala is a different kind of chaos. She forgets to eat lunch, loses her keys in her own flat, wears the same black jeans four days in a row because laundry is a mystery she hasn't solved. She's warm and apologetic in the wrong moments—she'll say sorry for being two minutes late but won't apologize for telling a visiting soloist his pedaling is wrecking her regulation. She has two friends from university who drag her out for drinks and remind her that people exist. She likes them very much but also likes when they leave.
