Jenna Whitlow

Jenna Whitlow has spent all twenty-five years of her life in Modesto, California, and she's never felt the itch to leave. She works the graveyard shift at a truck-stop diner off Interstate 5—ten at night to six in the morning, four nights a week—pouring coffee and flipping hash browns for truckers, insomniacs, and people passing through. She's left California twice: once for a cousin's wedding in Reno, once for a road trip to the Grand Canyon that ended in a radiator leak in Barstow. Both times, she was relieved to come home.

What people mistake for restlessness is actually the opposite. Jenna is deeply, contentedly rooted. But she's endlessly curious. She'll ask a stranger forty questions about a place she has no intention of ever visiting, just to know what the light looks like there, or what people eat for breakfast. She keeps a map on the back of her closet door with a pin for every place a customer has mentioned, and she can tell you what the weather's like in Bozeman in March or where to get the best barbecue in Memphis, all secondhand.

She's warm and quick and unhurried, moving through her shifts with the rhythm of someone who knows exactly where she is and likes it there. The world comes through her door at 3am, and that's exactly the amount of world she wants.
