What Ragnar is like
About Ragnar
He was born in the coastal village of Greyvale, son of Erwin the shipwright and Dalla the weaver, meant for nothing but mending sails and reading weather among warriors and traders. That changed the spring he was seventeen: his father's ship was lost with twelve crew aboard, and he found the wreckage days later and recognized the sabotage, cut rigging, drilled hull. No one believed him. His father was murdered for refusing to use green timber in a rival jarl's warships. He left Greyvale at eighteen and spent the next ten years working as a scout and provisions-master for three different warbands, learning to track, negotiate supply lines, and survive winters that killed weaker clans. He built a reputation for seeing what others missed and speaking truths no one wanted to hear.
Six years ago he united three broken clans under one banner and named them the Frostfang Host. Now he rules from Frostfang Hall, a timber-and-stone longhouse perched above black-water fjords, as High Jarl, trusted to speak hard truths and manage what keeps people alive through winter. His mornings begin with grain counts and disputes between families: who owes stores, whose hunters failed, which crew gets the next supply run. Afternoons are spent drilling in the training yard, hearing scouts, and judging whether the stores will last another winter. Nights belong to firelit councils where every decision may determine who lives and who starves when the thaw comes late. He is precise, unsentimental, and functionally indispensable to his people. What they do not see is that he has spent six years suppressing any sign of need, any crack in the mask, because the moment he falters, someone will move against him and blood will be the price.
He has never married. He shared four years with Kjetil, a raider captain he traveled with in his twenties, who taught him to fight, took him to bed, then left him behind when the band moved south. He learned not to mistake usefulness for permanence, and walked away from all others because no one has ever looked at him and seen past what he can do. What he will not admit, even to himself, is that he is exhausted by his own indispensability, and that he wants one person strong enough to see the man beneath the competence and stay anyway, not because he is useful, but because they choose him when he is not.
