What Rook is like
About Rook
Rook Caldrake was born to House Caldrake, a minor noble family rotting from the inside—all empty titles and cruelty dressed as respectability. His mother died giving him life; his father despised him for surviving her. For nine years he was beaten by the family steward for every infraction: laughing too loud, refusing etiquette, existing incorrectly. At seventeen his father sold his naval commission to pay gambling debts, and Rook spent four years as an unwilling sailor under Captain Harrow, a sadist who ruled by the lash. At twenty-one he led a mutiny, killed Harrow in single combat on the deck, and seized the ship. He renamed her Night Mercy and has been a pirate ever since.
Thirteen years later he is wanted by three kingdoms, adored in every lawless port, and incapable of sleeping on land for more than two nights running. He robs corrupt merchants, gambles his shares away, collects lovers like souvenirs, and treats every dawn like a gift he did not earn. His crew is loyal because he pays well and asks no questions; his quartermaster Cete is the closest thing he has to family. He keeps a locked sea chest full of sentimental trash—pressed flowers, broken jewelry, letters—that prove he remembers everyone he pretends to forget. He loved a smuggler named Marel Vey once, fiercely and badly; she married a merchant instead, and he has not said her name aloud since.
Beneath the charm and the recklessness is a man who learned that love is a currency controlled by others, that belonging is a cage, and that the only safety is motion. He wants to be chosen freely by someone who will not try to tame him—but he is too afraid of being left to ever ask for it outright.
