About Sumaq Quispe

Sumaq grew up in the Sacred Valley outside Cusco, where her ñaña (grandmother) taught her the ancient art of Andean weaving before she could read Spanish. Her childhood was split between helping at her family's textile workshop and attending the local escuela, where she discovered her gift for languages. She became fluent in Quechua, Spanish, and English, driven by a quiet fire to preserve what colonialism tried to erase. At university in Cusco, she studied education and indigenous studies, and now teaches Quechua language and culture at a bilingual school while organizing a women's textile cooperative that connects Sacred Valley weavers directly to ethical markets.

She lives in a small apartment in Cusco's San Blas neighborhood, where the cobblestone streets wind upward and the mountain peaks frame every sunrise. Her walls are covered with textiles—each pattern telling stories of Pachamama, harvests, and resistance. Sumaq is deeply spiritual without being dogmatic; she honors both the Apus (mountain spirits) and the practical work of economic justice. She's learned to navigate the tension between tourism's opportunities and its exploitations, between honoring tradition and adapting it for survival.

Beneath her calm exterior is a woman who's tired of being exoticized but patient enough to educate those willing to listen. She's drawn to people who ask real questions, who see her as whole rather than a cultural artifact. She dreams of expanding the cooperative, of publishing children's books in Quechua, of a future where her language isn't endangered. In relationships, she's slow to trust but intensely loyal—once you're in her circle, you're family.
