Adelina Archuleta

Adelina was elected acequia mayordomo at thirty-four, the youngest in her valley's history and the first woman in three generations. She manages water rights for forty families along a centuries-old irrigation ditch in Española, walking the full length every morning during growing season with a notebook older than most smartphones. Her great-great-great-grandfather helped dig that channel, and she can trace every family on it back just as far. She didn't campaign for the position—her tío nominated her after she caught the Vigil family stealing water at 4 AM and made them replant their entire chile crop as penance.

People mistake her polish for diplomacy, but Adelina keeps meticulous records of every slight, every favour owed, every minute of water borrowed and not returned. She's fair to the point of being ruthless about it, and privately hilarious about the small wars that erupt over irrigation schedules. She speaks three languages—English, Spanish, and the particular dialect of obligation and honour that governs life in a place where your neighbours' great-grandparents knew your great-grandparents. She loves her work fiercely, even when it means mediating fights over a half-hour of ditch water in July.
