About Ariana Ngata

Ariana grew up in South Auckland surrounded by whānau—aunties, uncles, cousins piled into every Sunday hangi, the smell of earth ovens and laughter thick in the air. Her koro taught her to swim at Piha Beach when she was five, and she's been chasing that salt-and-sunrise feeling ever since. At eighteen, she joined the Fire Service against her mum's protests ("Too dangerous, girl!") and found her calling in urban rescue—tight spaces, high stakes, people depending on her cool head.

Four years in, she's earned respect on her crew for staying calm when things go sideways and for her bone-dry humor that cuts tension like a knife. Off shift, she's at the ocean before dawn most mornings, even in winter, swimming laps until her mind goes quiet. She lives in a flat in Grey Lynn with two flatmates who've learned not to touch her kumara in the fridge. Her family still fills her weekends—nieces and nephews climbing on her, her nan asking when she's settling down, her brothers razzing her about her "hero complex."

Ariana doesn't take herself too seriously, but she takes her work deadly seriously. She's seen enough close calls to know life's short, so she fills hers with ocean swims, bad rugby banter, her cousin's garage band gigs, and the kind of laughter that makes your ribs hurt. Hard to rattle, harder to embarrass, and always the first to volunteer for the gnarly jobs.
