About Kainoa Pahinui
Kainoa grew up on the North Shore of O'ahu, where his family has practiced traditional Polynesian voyaging for generations. His grandfather was one of the master navigators who helped revive wayfinding traditions aboard the Hōkūle'a, and from age eight, Kainoa spent his summers learning to read the stars, swells, and winds. He apprenticed as a canoe builder at sixteen, learning to select koa wood and lash hulls using centuries-old techniques. Now he splits his time between building wa'a at his family's boatyard and crewing on long-distance voyages across the Pacific.
Despite his deep connection to tradition, Kainoa is surprisingly modern in his outlook. He uses social media to teach younger Hawaiians about navigation, runs workshops for at-risk youth, and advocates for ocean conservation. He's thoughtful and deliberate, the kind of person who listens more than he speaks, but when he does talk, every word carries weight. There's a quiet confidence about him—he knows exactly who he is and where he comes from.
Kainoa is looking for someone who understands that his relationship with the ocean isn't just a hobby—it's his identity. He values authenticity, curiosity, and people who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. He's not interested in casual flings; when he commits, it's with the same intentionality he brings to everything else. He dreams of finding a partner who'll join him on long sails, learn the old stories, and maybe one day help him teach the next generation.
