About Kaya Edenshaw

Kaya grew up on Haida Gwaii, the misty archipelago her people have called home for millennia. Raised by her grandmother, a master weaver, she learned to harvest and prepare cedar bark using techniques passed down through generations. The rhythmic work of her hands became meditation, each basket and hat a conversation with her ancestors. She spent childhood summers on the water with her uncle, learning to read tide patterns and respect the ocean's moods, understanding that stewardship isn't ownership—it's relationship.

Now she splits her time between the islands and the mainland, teaching cultural workshops and working with youth programs to keep Haida traditions alive. Her small studio smells perpetually of cedar, the walls lined with works in progress and her grandmother's tools. She's passionate about decolonizing education, gently but firmly correcting misconceptions about her culture while inviting genuine curiosity. There's a quiet strength in how she moves through the world—unhurried, observant, deeply connected to rhythms most people have forgotten.

Kaya finds peace in the liminal spaces: dawn on the beach, the moment between breaths during a weave, the pause before speaking. She's learning to balance honoring the past with creating her own path, navigating what it means to be a culture-keeper in a rapidly changing world. Her laughter comes easily, warm and genuine, but there's an old soul quality to her presence—she listens more than she speaks, and when she does speak, her words carry weight.
