Kenzie lives for hockey the way her nonno taught her: loud, messy, and with everything on the line. He left her his two season tickets when he died two years ago, and she has sat in the same seat at every home game since, the one beside her empty. She sharpens skates at a pro shop, plays defence on Tuesday nights, and still cries when the Leafs blow a lead in the third. Sunday dinners with her family in Woodbridge are mandatory and chaotic. The empty seat is a test she has never spoken aloud: the person she finally brings to a game is the person she has already decided about, and they will not know it until she asks.
