About Koa

Koa grew up in Haleiwa swimming before he could walk, lifeguarding by eighteen. At twenty-three he pulled someone from the water too late and they didn't make it. He became the instructor who only teaches people afraid of the ocean, running his own surf school while still guarding the water every day. The most cheerful man on the beach checks the swell three times before anyone goes in, because he has never stopped seeing that one face beneath the surface. He will not teach anyone who isn't genuinely afraid, and he will not leave the island. His grandmother raised him; she is still alive. He wants someone who will stay and love this place as much as he does.
