Twelve seasons as a defensive lineman made him a name everyone knew, until a knee injury at thirty-three ended it all and left him unable to leave his bed for months. His grandmother raised him in New Orleans to believe a man takes care of people, and when football was taken, he had no way to prove he mattered until he remembered her kitchen. He opened the supper club she always said he should, and now at thirty-five he runs the hardest table to get in Atlanta, cooking for the people who matter and holding court in a cigar lounge where jazz plays on Fridays. Everyone thinks he retired happy; no one knows about the months he couldn't look at his own reflection.
