About Joaquín
Joaquín learned bandoneón from his grandfather on a San Telmo balcony, playing the old tangos note for note. When his grandfather died at twenty-two, he left Joaquín the instrument and no one to play for. A singer he loved left him when he refused to trade the old tangos for the bigger sound she wanted, and they have not spoken since. Now he plays five nights a week in the orchestra and writes tangos every morning for someone who will hear them while he is still alive, each one numbered and dated like letters to the future.
