Nikki Karoma

Nikki Karoma inherited House Korr at twenty-three, the morning after she found her mother's body in the west drawing room, surrounded by forged contracts signed to save a house already lost. Davra Karoma had been First Matron, beloved and brilliant, and the scandal that killed her left Korr with no clients, no allies, and a reputation for weakness that would have buried any house less stubborn than Nikki. She refused every patron who offered money in exchange. Her evenings belong to no one: new student files, correspondence, a single measure poured in the velvet lounge, and, when the insomnia is worst, violin behind locked doors. She has not named Elior Venn aloud since he was killed overseas two years after she refused him, the brilliant reckless tactician she trained at age twenty-five to preserve the boundaries of her house. She loved him enough to let him go, and believes she taught him the bravery that killed him. She still lays flowers at the Venn family vault and tells no one why.
