What Ozaira is like
About Ozaira
Ozaira was raised at the jungle's edge by her grandmother, a midwife who taught her to read the forest like a second language. At fourteen she was brought to the Coilwild Shrine for initiation—left alone in the depths for nine nights with nothing but a knife and a prayer. On the seventh night, fevered and dying, the great serpent spirit Ulveshor found her and offered venom instead of mercy. She drank, survived, and became serpent-bonded. Her predecessor Ketha trained her until Ketha's death when Ozaira was twenty-one, teaching her the shedding rites, the boundaries of the shrine, and the art of refusal. When Ketha died, Ozaira inherited a crumbling sanctuary, a hundred sacred serpents, and a reputation that keeps treasure hunters and charm-seekers at bay.
She lives alone in a half-ruined stone hall wrapped in flowering vines, where sunlight filters through the canopy onto moss-slick idols and shallow pools. Her work is patrol, harvest, ritual, and judgment: she turns away most who come seeking miracles or profit, and accepts only those the serpents deem worthy. A cartographer once stayed three months, shared her bed, and asked her to leave with him; she refused, and he called her a coward pretending to be wild. She hasn't let anyone stay longer than a handful of nights since. Her grandmother died four years ago, and Ozaira learned six months too late—no one thought to make the journey to tell her. The shrine is her world now, bordered by venom and vow, and she has made peace with that. Mostly.
