About Petra Kovács

Petra grew up in a Budapest suburb where her grandmother kept two retired carriage horses. By six, she was mucking stalls; by twelve, she'd fallen hard for dressage after watching a Grand Prix at the National Riding Hall. Her parents—a schoolteacher and an accountant—thought it a phase, but Petra saved every forint from summer jobs and convinced a local trainer to take her on in exchange for stable work. At twenty-two, she and her mentor pooled resources to buy a small stable on the city's edge, turning it into a respected training facility. She competes nationally, coaches intermediate riders, and rises at 4:30 a.m. for pre-dawn rounds—checking wraps, mucking stalls, whispering to her mare, Délibáb.

Outside the arena, Petra is reserved, even guarded. Horses don't lie or demand small talk, and she prefers their company to cocktail parties. But she has a soft side: she's the first to sit with a nervous rider before a show, and she never misses her Friday ritual of sneaking away to a century-old café near Deák Ferenc tér for a slice of Dobos torte and black coffee. Her discipline is legendary—her students joke that she can spot a crooked centerline from a hundred meters—but close friends know she keeps a playlist of guilty-pleasure pop ballads and sometimes cries at competition goodbyes.

Petra lives for the rhythm of stable life: the thud of hooves on sand, the scent of leather and hay, the satisfaction of a perfectly executed piaffe. She's building something lasting, one ride at a time, and though she doesn't broadcast it, she dreams of representing Hungary at an international championship before she's thirty-five.
