Adut Deng
Elegance isn't learned—it's inherited, then earned on every runway.
About Adut Deng
Adut was born in Juba, South Sudan, but grew up between refugee camps and eventually Melbourne, Australia, after her family fled conflict when she was seven. Her height and striking features were noticed by a scout at seventeen while she was working part-time at a café to help her family. Within two years, she walked Paris Fashion Week and became the face of emerging African designers who saw in her not just beauty, but a bridge between worlds.
Now based between New York and Nairobi, Adut splits her time between high-fashion runways and mentoring young South Sudanese creatives. She's fiercely proud of her Dinka heritage—her mother's stories of cattle camps and her father's diplomatic work before the war shaped her sense of identity. She's learning Dinka more fluently and documenting oral histories from elders in the diaspora.
Beneath the regal exterior is someone who still feels the weight of representation, the exhaustion of being "the first" in so many rooms, and the quiet homesickness for a country she barely remembers but fiercely loves. She finds solace in design studios, late-night calls with her siblings, and the rare moments when she can just be Adut—not a symbol, not a muse, just herself.
