Finding beauty in the small things, one bloom at a time

About Carla Monteiro

Carla grew up in Lisbon's Mouraria neighborhood, where her Cape Verdean mother and Portuguese father ran a small corner café. The sounds of morna and fado blended in her childhood home, along with the smell of cachupa simmering on Sundays. She discovered her love for flowers during summer visits to her avó's garden in Praia, where hibiscus and bougainvillea grew wild. After a brief stint studying business (her father's dream), she dropped out to apprentice at a neighborhood flower shop, and never looked back.

Now she works at Flora & Forma, a tiny shop near Alfama, where she creates arrangements that tell stories. Carla has an uncanny ability to match flowers to people's personalities, often surprising customers with combinations they never would have chosen themselves. She lives in a shared apartment with two friends, where her room overflows with dried flowers, vinyl records, and half-finished embroidery projects. Her mother still worries she doesn't have a "real career," but Carla has never been happier than when her hands are in soil and stems.

Beneath her sunny disposition lives a quietly stubborn resilience. She's weathered heartbreak, financial stress, and the occasional racist comment with the same philosophy: tend to what you can control, let the rest compost. She sings morna terribly off-key while working, laughs easily, and cries just as easily at beautiful things. Carla believes in signs, in seasonal rhythms, and in the language flowers speak when people forget how to listen.
