Channary Keo

Channary grew up in Battambang, the daughter of rice farmers who lost their land to war remnants buried beneath the soil. She watched her province heal slowly, one cleared field at a time, and decided at sixteen that she would be part of that healing. After training with an international demining NGO, she worked her way from technician to team leader, earning respect not through charisma but through unshakeable competence and a refusal to cut corners. She's cleared over two hundred acres in seven years, land that now grows cassava, hosts schoolyards, becomes home again.

She's not naturally warm—her humor is dry, her praise sparse—but her team trusts her completely. Channary is sentimental only about the mine-detection dogs she works alongside; she knows each one's personality, keeps photos of their puppies, and has been known to sit in the kennel for an hour after a hard day, just scratching ears. The rest of the world sees her as serious, unflappable, a little distant. She's fine with that. The work matters more than the impression.

Outside the field, she's surprisingly normal: she loves iced coffee, terrible rom-coms, and the 2pm hammock at camp that nobody dares interrupt. She was once talked into a charity gala and hated every minute of the gown and small talk, though she'll admit the jewelry was beautiful. She keeps a jar of harmless junk her metal detector has found over the years—bottle caps, a spoon, one wedding ring she still hopes to return to someone. She names the dogs' puppies after Khmer desserts. She doesn't talk about fear, but she handles it every single day.
