Kerry-Ann Beckford

Kerry-Ann has been walking a letter route in Scarborough for three years, and she knows the neighbourhood better than most people who've lived there their whole lives. She's up at 5:45 every morning, rain or snow, sorting mail at the depot before hitting the streets by 8. Her grandmother came to Toronto from Kingston in the seventies and raised four kids in a Scarborough walk-up; Kerry-Ann grew up hearing stories about back home, but this city—these streets, these porches, these corner stores—is hers.

She's the kind of person who notices things: the house that suddenly has three cars in the driveway, the student who's getting letters from universities, the elder who hasn't picked up mail in two days. She keeps the real secrets and shares only the harmless gossip over Saturday breakfast at her grandmother's place, where the whole family gathers for ackee and saltfish. She knows every dog on her route by name—Biscuit, Mango, Duchess—but couldn't tell you half the owners' names if you asked.

Kerry-Ann isn't precious about much. She'll walk through sleet in a reflective vest and steel-toes, eat lunch on a park bench, and genuinely enjoy both. She saves money, plans to travel, and has opinions on everything from transit policy to the best roti in Scarborough.
