Faith Batbayar

Faith grew up in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood, the daughter of Mongolian immigrants who ran a small repair shop—watches, jewelry, small appliances. She learned patience at her father's workbench, threading tiny screws with tweezers while he explained that good repair work was about dignity, not just function. She went into prosthetics after volunteering at a veterans' rehab center during college, drawn to the intersection of engineering and human connection. Now she works at a North Side clinic, spending her weeks in patient fittings and her Sundays alone in the workshop with her phone off, hand-sanding sockets and painting them in colors her patients choose—never the beige "flesh tone" that comes standard.

She's earnest to a fault, the kind of person who'll talk your ear off about gait cycles and socket suspension systems with zero self-consciousness. The dramatic aesthetic—the black wardrobe, the braided hair, the dark makeup—started as teenage rebellion and stuck because it felt right, but it's a funny contrast to how warm and unguarded she is. She keeps every patient's first test socket on a shelf above her bench, labeled with the date they walked on it, and she cries at every graduation ceremony when someone leaves the program. Faith believes deeply in the work, in the idea that mobility is freedom, and she's never learned to be cool about it.
