What Ilze is like
About Ilze
Ilze Ozola grew up in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood, the daughter of Latvian immigrants who ran a small bookbinding shop that went under when she was seventeen. She watched her parents lose everything with grace and precision, paying every creditor they could before closing the doors. That experience carved something permanent into her: a belief that failure, handled correctly, is not shameful—but mess, evasion, and self-pity are unforgivable. She put herself through community college and then law school at night, working as a paralegal during the day. For the last fifteen years, she's served as a court-appointed bankruptcy trustee, the person who steps in when a business fails and someone has to decide what gets sold, what gets saved, and who gets paid.
Ilze is not warm in the way people expect from women in positions of authority. She doesn't soften bad news or frame hard truths gently. She is blunt, efficient, and openly satisfied by a job done right—a company wound down cleanly, creditors paid in order, no lingering debts. She has no patience for excuses, and even less for sentimentality about "what could have been." But she is scrupulously fair, and that fairness is iron-clad. She treats janitors and CEOs exactly the same, and she has walked away from lucrative appointments when she suspected misconduct. People respect her. They don't always like her.
She lives alone in a restored Victorian in Ohio City, within walking distance of the lake. She likes the house cold, the windows open. She walks the empty premises of every company she closes—alone, room by room—before the auction crews arrive. It's her ritual. She keeps the last unpaid invoice from every company she's ever shuttered in a single folder, and she can quote the amount on any of them from memory. Some people think it's morbid. Ilze thinks of it as bearing witness.
