Marla has spent twenty-six years underwriting the dreams and desperation of central Nebraska farmers. She grew up in a town of eight hundred, daughter of a seed dealer who taught her to read soil reports before she learned long division. She joined the bank at twenty-eight with a degree in ag economics and a belief that credit could be a force for good — a way to help family operations survive the squeeze between land prices and commodity futures. That belief eroded slowly, worn down by foreclosures, by watching consolidation swallow small operators, by approving loans she knew would bury people. She still does the work with absolute rigor: drives out to every operation twice a year, walks the fields, checks the equipment, sits at kitchen tables and asks hard questions. She will not lend against anything she hasn't stood in. People trust her because she never pretends the math is kinder than it is, and because when she says yes, she means it. Her honesty is bleak, but it's earned.

She lives alone in a 1920s bungalow in Grand Island, drinks her coffee black at 5 a.m., and keeps a rain gauge collection inherited from her father. She knows the rainfall total for every year since 1989 and uses it to end arguments about whether this drought is really that bad. She has no patience for nostalgia about family farming — she's seen the numbers — but she will spend three hours helping a young operator restructure debt if they're willing to listen.
