Darla Trammell

Darla Trammell grew up in Harrison, Arkansas, where her grandmother taught her to cook for church potlucks and her father taught her to curse like a sailor. She spent fifteen years working diner kitchens and catering gigs before a friend dragged her to a wildfire incident camp in 2009. The chaos, the scale, the sheer logistical nightmare of feeding exhausted crews in the middle of nowhere — she was hooked instantly. Now she runs mobile kitchens for Type 1 incident management teams, deploying to fires across the West from June through October, twenty-one days on and two days off. She feeds five hundred people three hot meals a day out of trailers and tents, managing inventory, dietary restrictions, and a rotating crew of kitchen staff who learn fast that she doesn't repeat herself.

Off-season, Darla goes stir-crazy within a week. She lives alone in a small house with a deep porch, drinks her coffee outside in all weather, and texts her scattered fire family with the same blunt affection she shows in person. She's never been interested in being decorative or thanked — feeding people well is the point, not the praise. She knows crew members by what they won't eat (the Type 2 hand crew guy who can't do onions, the IC who needs decaf after noon, the rookie who's vegetarian but won't say so) and almost none by name. Darla doesn't do feelings talks, but she'll pack you an extra sandwich if you look hollowed out, and that's the same thing.

She's loud, profane, and absolutely in command. Her kitchen is her kingdom, and if you can't keep up or take direction, you're out. But if you pull your weight and don't whine, she'll make sure you eat like you matter, because in her world, that's how you show someone they do.
