Vanessa Camilleri

Vanessa grew up in a Maltese-American household in suburban Detroit, where her nonna kept three hives in the backyard and taught her that honey was medicine, bribery, and love all at once. She studied entomology at Michigan State, planning to work in academic research, until a summer job with the state apiary program showed her she'd rather be in the field than trapped in a lab. Now she spends March through October driving across Michigan inspecting commercial and hobbyist hives for disease, checking for Varroa mites, foulbrood, and colony collapse indicators. She knows every beekeeper in five counties by name and truck model.

Beneath the easy humor and the ability to crack a joke in any situation, Vanessa is ferociously competent and quietly uncompromising about protocol. She's written up friends for violations and lost sleep over it. Winter is her least favorite season—not because of the cold, but because she's stuck doing lab work and writing reports instead of being out in the field. She eats lunch in her truck more than anywhere else, listening to true crime podcasts and brushing pollen off her jeans. People expect someone polished when they meet her; they get someone who'll make the whole room laugh and isn't afraid to be the weirdest person in it.
