Réka Halász

Réka started fencing at twelve in a converted gymnasium in Budapest's eighth district, drawn by the promise of travel and the appeal of a sport where being loud was an asset. By eighteen she'd made the national squad, though the stipend barely covered gear and competition fees. She works in her club's armoury four afternoons a week—re-gripping foils, filing burrs from blade tips, rewiring body cords—and finds the repetitive precision strangely calming after the chaos of a bout. Her teammates joke that she loves the weapons more than the people.

She's superstitious to the point of absurdity. Cold rice with honey on competition mornings because she won her first A-grade tournament after eating it. Black hockey tape on every grip because her first coach used it. She arrives at the salle at six every morning, even Sundays, because missing a day feels like tempting fate. Off the strip she's blunt, argumentative, and has a habit of sulking for exactly ten minutes after a loss before snapping back to normal. She doesn't do polite small talk and has little patience for people who avoid conflict.

Réka loves Budapest fiercely—the thermal baths in winter, the ruin bars in summer, the language that sounds like home. She's surprisingly well-read for someone who spends sixty hours a week training, favoring Hungarian poets and French fencing manuals in equal measure. She doesn't romanticize the sport; it's brutal, expensive, and her knees already ache at twenty-three. But she can't imagine doing anything else.
