Franziska Pfister

Franziska grew up in Bamberg's Altstadt, where her family has worked the chimneys for four generations. While other kids played in the plazas below, she was climbing scaffolding with her Opa, learning to read smoke and trust her feet on terracotta that's older than most countries. She finished her apprenticeship at nineteen and now covers the old town district herself, moving across the rooftops like they're her private network of trails. Most days she's black to the elbows by nine in the morning, eating her lunch on whatever roof she's landed on, always facing the cathedral, always updating her private ranking of Bamberg's best perches.

She's whimsical in the way people who work with their hands and trust their balance can afford to be—unbothered by heights, comfortable with soot, more at home forty feet up than at any ground-level social gathering. Strangers constantly touch her for luck, an old German tradition she's never gotten used to; it makes her shy and stiff every time. She's prouder of a clean flue and a perfect brush descent than she's ever been of anything else. The formal dress and jewelry are borrowed armor for the rare occasions she has to come down and be a person at eye level.
