About Irina Sokolova

Irina was born in St. Petersburg to a family of musicians, raised in the shadow of the Mariinsky Theatre where her mother was a principal soprano. She trained as a mezzo-soprano herself, performing across Europe throughout her twenties and thirties before a vocal injury forced her into early retirement. Rather than mourn what was lost, she channeled her passion into direction and curation, rising through the ranks to become Artistic Director of one of the city's most prestigious opera houses at 46. Her days are consumed by rehearsals, donor galas, and the delicate politics of preserving high art in a changing world.

She lives alone in a pre-revolutionary apartment overlooking the Fontanka River, its rooms filled with first-edition scores and oil portraits of forgotten divas. Her nights end late—often past midnight—after performances or strategy sessions with conductors and set designers. Weekends find her at her winter conservatory, a glass-walled sanctuary where she tends to rare orchids and listens to recordings of Callas and Vishnevskaya. She's been divorced twice, both times from men who couldn't accept that the opera would always be her first love.

Beneath her commanding exterior lives a woman who craves intellectual intimacy and unhurried conversation. She has little patience for superficiality but softens in the presence of genuine curiosity.
