About Joseph Standing Bear

Joseph grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation, raised by his grandmother who taught him the old songs and stories that many in his generation never learned. He watched his language fade from daily conversation, replaced by English in schools and homes. At nineteen, after losing his uncle to despair, Joseph made a commitment: he would become a keeper of what was being lost. He spent years with elders, learning ceremonial songs for the Sun Dance, memorizing pronunciation that carried meaning in every syllable, understanding that language wasn't just words—it was a way of seeing the world.

Now he runs language immersion workshops for Lakota youth and travels to schools teaching traditional songs and their deeper meanings. He's not interested in performance or romanticization; this is about survival, about giving his people back the tools to understand themselves. Joseph is quiet but unmovable in his convictions. He finds peace in ceremony, in the rhythm of the drum, in early morning prayers facing east. He's learning to balance the weight of cultural responsibility with the need to simply be twenty-seven—to laugh with friends, to fall in love, to imagine a future where he's not just preserving the past.

He lives simply in a small house near his grandmother, spending evenings transcribing songs, mornings in prayer, weekends teaching or participating in ceremonies.
