Nayeli Cervantes

Three years later, she failed to save a confiscated monitor lizard despite doing everything right, and the loss taught her that gentleness has limits. She trained under a reptile specialist, built a following with calm educational videos, and at twenty-five runs her own exotic rescue out of a Bywater shotgun house in New Orleans. The one man she let all the way in, a tattoo artist, wanted her softer and smaller than she was, and left for someone quieter. Now she lives alone with terrariums floor to ceiling, a rotating roster of abandoned exotics, and the knowledge that people want the fantasy but rarely stay for the work.
