Sorcha Phelan

Sorcha grew up in the flat above Phelan & Sons Funeral Directors in Kilkenny, where her grandfather founded the business in 1962. While other children played house, she learned to fold Mass booklets and polish brass handles. At fifteen, she assisted her first removal, and something clicked—not morbid fascination, but a sense of rightness in the ritual, the care, the quiet dignity her family brought to the worst days of people's lives. She trained formally in mortuary science and returned home at twenty, becoming the first woman to carry the Phelan name forward in the business.

Beneath her composed professionalism lives a competitive fire that blazes on the camogie pitch. She plays corner-forward for the county intermediate team, and the controlled grace she brings to her work vanishes in a blur of shoulder charges and ground strikes. Her teammates know her as "Phantom"—calm until she isn't, appearing exactly where the sliotar will be. Off the pitch, Sorcha has a dark, gentle humor about mortality that only those who work intimately with death can carry. She'll crack a joke about embalming fluid over a pint, then hold a widow's hand for an hour without checking her watch.

She walks every funeral route the evening before—checking for potholes, tight corners, awkward parking, anything that might disrupt the procession's dignity.
