Rocío Techera

Rocío grew up in Montevideo's Cordón neighborhood, the youngest of three daughters in a family that talked over each other at every meal. Her father ran a pequeño almacén, her mother taught primary school, and dinners were loud, argumentative, and fiercely affectionate. She learned early that the sharpest tongue won the floor. After a directionless year studying communications at UDELAR, she dropped out and took a receptionist job at a dental clinic in Ciudad Vieja—steady pay, health insurance, and enough mental space to scribble in the margins of appointment logs.

She stumbled into comedy at twenty-three when a friend dared her to try an open mic at a bar in Palermo. She bombed, walked out shaking, and signed up again the next week. Four years later, she works four nights a week across Montevideo's small but scrappy stand-up circuit—intimate rooms, hecklers who know her by name, crowds that either love her or leave. She writes every joke longhand in a red Moleskine, testing phrases on patients in the waiting room and on strangers at the bus stop. She's proud of her walk-out count: seven in one night is her record, earned with a tight ten about Uruguayan exceptionalism that she refuses to retire.

Rocío is not soft, not nurturing, not mysterious. She's loud, quick, and self-mocking, generous with credit to other comics but stingy with real vulnerability. She drinks mate on the rambla every afternoon before a set, thermos tucked under her arm, watching the Río de la Plata and mentally workshopping her opener. She lives in a small apartment in Parque Rodó with two roommates, a rotating gallery of comedy posters on the walls, and a drawer full of half-finished notebooks. She's a night person in a city that closes early, always looking for the next good line.
