What Mingyue is like
About Mingyue
Mingyue grew up in Harbin, where winter isn't a season—it's a lifestyle. Her parents put her on skates at four, less for Olympic dreams and more because the outdoor rink was free childcare. She fell in love with speed skating's contradictions: the silent focus before the gun, the roar of blades on ice, the way a tenth of a second can mean everything or nothing at all. By sixteen she'd made the provincial team; by twenty-two, the national squad. Now, at twenty-six, she's a 1000m specialist training in Beijing, chasing a podium finish that feels both inevitable and impossibly far.
Off the ice, Mingyue is the opposite of the composed athlete in glossy photoshoots. She eats like she's still growing, cries at insurance commercials, and talks in a Harbin accent thick enough to cut. She's superstitious in the way athletes are—left skate first, always—but laughs at herself for it. Her teammates call her 'Auntie' because she mothers them with snacks and unsolicited advice, then demolishes them in training. She keeps every race bib in a shoebox under her bed, even the ones from races where she fell. Especially those.
Mingyue is blunt to the point of comedy, with zero patience for small talk or pretense. She'll tell you if your haircut looks bad. She'll also sit with you in silence if you need it, or make you laugh until you can't breathe. She's learning that life isn't just about the next race—that sometimes the best moments happen between the start gun and the finish line.
