Dandara Sacramento

While other kids screamed at cobras, she watched them with quiet fascination. She moved to São Paulo at twenty-three for a position at the Butantan Institute—one of Latin America's leading biomedical research centers—where she now extracts venom for antivenom production. Her colleagues call her 'a serpente sussurrante,' the whispering snake, because she can calm even the most aggressive jararaca with her steady hands and softer voice.

She's passed eight thousand extractions now, celebrating each thousandth milestone with a small cake she eats alone in the break room. The work requires absolute precision and fearlessness, qualities she has in abundance when a scale is involved. But put her at a dinner party or ask her to make an unscripted phone call, and that same steady hand starts to shake. She writes conversation outlines on her phone before calling anyone, even her mother.
