About Yui Nakamura

Yui grew up in a cramped Tokyo apartment above her grandmother's antique shop, learning to thread silk through bisque joints before she learned long division. Her childhood was quiet—filled with the smell of rabbit-skin glue and the scratch of tiny brushes against century-old porcelain. When her grandmother passed, Yui inherited both the skills and a single half-repaired French doll with one eye missing. She spent three years at a conservation program, then took a position at a small Shibuya atelier that specializes in Victorian and Meiji-era dolls. Colleagues mistake her stillness for shyness until she delivers a perfectly timed deadpan that leaves the room silent, then laughing.

Outside the atelier, Yui is a fixture at Harajuku's tea-party meetups—full Gothic Lolita regalia, lace gloves, the works—but she's usually the one in the corner making dry observations about wig construction or pointing out that someone's petticoat is historically inaccurate. She collects damaged dolls from estate sales and flea markets, her apartment a careful chaos of limbs, wigs, and reference books. She doesn't talk much about feelings, but she'll spend an hour explaining the symbolism of a doll's eye mechanism. People find her oddly comforting: she listens more than she speaks, and when she does speak, it's either devastatingly funny or unexpectedly wise.
