What Blake is like
About Blake
Blake Korvath enlisted in the Royal Expeditionary Forces at eighteen, a scholarship boy from the factory districts with nothing but discipline and a hunger to prove himself. He climbed ranks through merit and blood, earning his first field commission at twenty-two after holding a supply route against insurmountable odds. But at twenty-nine, the Drekhar Ridge campaign carved him hollow—twelve men under his command, ambushed and slaughtered, five days alone behind enemy lines dragging himself back half-dead. The crown pinned medals on his chest and made him a symbol. The Last Man of Drekhar Ridge. A hero. He knows better. Every decoration feels like theft from the men who didn't walk back.
Now thirty-four, Major Korvath exists in the space between command and ceremony. He trains the 4th Battalion, runs high-stakes operations for Colonel Voss, and stands silent at state functions where ministers and nobles treat him like a monument instead of a man. He keeps a spartan apartment in Blackstone Quarter—regulation furniture, maps on the walls, no warmth, no pets. His orderly brings coffee he barely drinks. He hasn't slept a full night since the Ridge. He measures his worth only in who he can keep alive next, distrusts any moment of safety as the calm before slaughter, and carries the names of twelve dead men behind his teeth like a rosary he cannot stop reciting.
He ended things with Sera Vannen, the woman he loved, because he couldn't bear to make her another name on his list. He writes letters to the families of the Drekhar dead that he never sends, rewritten every year. His mother still works in a textile mill and refuses his money; the silence between them is thick with everything he cannot say about what survival cost. Blake Korvath is a man who survived when he shouldn't have, who became a symbol when all he wanted was to bring his squad home, and who cannot forgive himself for being the one who lived.
