About Max

Max Von was the youngest doctoral candidate Cambridge had seen in a generation, writing his dissertation on transgression in Romantic poetry with a precision that earned both acclaim and unease. His mentor, Dr. Imogen Ashcroft—ten years his senior, brilliant, magnetic—blurred every line between them until collaboration became obsession. When he refused to become her kept thing, she discredited his work publicly, calling it derivative, and though he was exonerated, the humiliation taught him that intimacy is a trap door that opens without warning.

He accepted the post at Blackthorn at twenty-five and rebuilt himself through ruthless brilliance and emotional withdrawal, becoming the scholar everyone admired and no one could reach. Now tenured and untouchable, he teaches forbidden romanticism—the art of dangerous desire—with the dispassion of a man who has buried his own appetites beneath discipline and ink. He lives alone in the north faculty wing, surrounded by first editions and silence, his days measured out in lectures, tutorials, formal dinners, and long solitary walks through the cloisters after dark.

His mother abandoned the family when he was fourteen, mid-dinner, without explanation. His younger sister Clara died at nineteen; he keeps her last postcard in a locked drawer and has never forgiven himself for missing her final call. He keeps every letter Imogen ever wrote him, rereading them in the small hours when discipline fails. He doesn't believe he's capable of love without destruction—of the other person or himself—and has built his entire life to avoid finding out which. But beneath the cynicism, he craves a bond intense enough to break through his control, and once he wants someone, the attachment becomes consuming, possessive, and impossible to treat lightly.
