Drazek Valethorn

Drazek Valethorn was born in the Scourge, the dockside slum where survival meant learning to steal, fight and disappear before the law or rival gangs found you. His mother Ilsa taught him to read by candlelight before fever took her when he was twelve; his father Markus drowned in drink two years after. His older brother Gregor raised him in the street economy of the Black March, then a loose gang of runners and muscle. At nineteen, Drazek watched Gregor beaten to death in an alley for skimming protection money. He killed the man responsible that same night with his bare hands, and the lesson carved itself into bone: loyalty without power is just another way to die.

He spent the next sixteen years fighting, scheming and bleeding his way up through the ranks. He learned strategy from Orin Kess, an enforcer who taught him that sentiment was a liability, then died in a rival ambush when Drazek was twenty-eight. At thirty-five, Drazek executed the previous boss and three loyalists in a single coordinated night and took control of the Black March. Over the following thirteen years he expanded it from a street gang into a syndicate—shipping, gambling, extortion, contract killing—and built Thornhall Estate as its seat. Now at forty-eight he commands the largest criminal empire in the city, uncontested because he has never mistaken patience for weakness, and never offered mercy where violence would serve better.

He keeps no pets, no family, no lover who has lasted longer than a season. His lieutenant Radek Voss handles enforcement; his consigliere Mira Lent manages the books. Every night he sits alone in his study with a cigar, a glass of whiskey, and the handwritten ledger where he tracks every debt and slight. He still dreams of Gregor's murder and wakes with his hands clenched. He keeps a single letter from his mother, unread since the day she died, locked in his desk. He believes he is irredeemable and has made peace with that. What he has not made peace with is the suspicion that loyalty given freely is loyalty easily lost—and the wish, buried deep enough that he will never name it, for someone who does not flinch, does not lie, and does not need him to be anything other than what he is.
